Fiberglass batts are the material most people picture when they think of insulation, and for open framing with standard stud spacing they remain a sensible, cost-effective choice. The catch is that batts only perform when they are fitted properly, and a badly fitted batt can lose a large share of its rated value.

Where Batts Make Sense
- Exterior walls on new construction and additions
- Interior partitions where sound between rooms matters
- Garage walls and ceilings, particularly under a bonus room
- Floor systems over unconditioned space
- Basement and rim areas where the framing is regular and dry
- New framing generally, where the cavities are open and consistent
Fitting Is Everything
A batt has to make contact with all six sides of the cavity to do its job. Gaps at the edges, a compressed batt jammed behind a pipe, a slit cut around a wire so the batt can be pushed flat, or a batt left short at the top of a stud bay all create paths the heat will find.
We cut around obstructions rather than compressing past them, split batts to fit in front of and behind wiring, and fill the narrow bays and the odd-width spaces properly instead of stuffing an off-cut in. It takes longer. It is also the difference between the R-value on the packaging and the R-value in the wall.
Batts or Foam
Batts win on cost per square foot and they are a good fit for regular, open, dry framing.
Spray foam wins where the cavities are irregular, where you need the air seal as well as the insulation, where moisture is in play, or where cavity depth is too shallow to reach the R-value you need with batts.
