Cold floors in winter are the usual reason people call us about a crawl space. The floor is cold because the space under it is, and because there is often very little left between the two. Two Ways To Do It

Insulate the floor. The insulation goes between the floor joists and the crawl space stays outside the conditioned envelope. This is the simpler and cheaper approach and it works where the crawl space is genuinely dry.

Insulate the walls. Closed-cell foam goes on the foundation walls and the rim, which brings the crawl space inside the building envelope. Ductwork and pipes down there are then in conditioned space, which stops them losing heat and stops pipes freezing. This is the approach that pairs with encapsulation.

Which one suits your house depends on how dry the space is, whether the HVAC runs through it, and what the foundation is like. We look before we recommend.

Why Batts Keep Failing Down There

Fibreglass in a crawl space is fighting gravity and humidity at the same time. It holds moisture, gets heavy, pulls away from its supports and drops. Once it is hanging or on the ground it is doing nothing except holding damp against the wood.

Closed-cell foam is bonded rather than fixed, does not absorb water and does not sag. In a Middle Tennessee crawl space that difference tends to decide the job.

Insulation or Encapsulation

Encapsulation deals with moisture and air quality. Insulation deals with heat.

If the crawl space is damp, encapsulating first and insulating second is the order that works. Insulating a wet crawl space traps the water against the structure. Many houses need both, and we will tell you which problem yours actually has.
