About the Materials
Open-cell foam is lighter, expands further and is good at dampening sound, which suits interior walls and many attic roof decks. Closed-cell foam is denser, gives more R-value per inch, adds rigidity and resists moisture, which suits crawl spaces, rim joists and metal buildings. Plenty of jobs use both.
Cured foam is inert. The precautions apply during application and the ventilation period immediately after, which is why our crews wear full protective gear and we give you a re-entry time for the space.
For blown-in attic insulation, usually yes if the existing material is dry and sound. For spray foam, generally no, because old material holds moisture and stops the foam bonding. We assess it at the estimate.
Fibreglass batts in a damp crawl space absorb moisture, get heavy and pull away from their supports. Closed-cell foam is bonded rather than fixed and does not sag, which is why we usually recommend it under a house here.
About the Work
Most attics are a day or less. Most crawl space encapsulations are one to three days. Commercial buildings depend on size and access, and we give you a schedule with the quote.
For spray foam, the working area needs to be vacated during application and for the ventilation period after. We tell you the re-entry time before we start. Blown-in and batt work usually does not require it.
It depends on where the loss is. If the attic is thin, the crawl space is open and the house leaks air, then yes, it makes a real difference. We will tell you honestly if we think your problem is the HVAC rather than the envelope.
